I often say that age isn’t important.

It’s a state of mind.

Most days I have to remind myself that I’m not a teenager any more, and that cases I worked on in my early days, or things that were normal practice when I started out, happened before some of my colleagues were born.

But a name is important, or rather, getting it wrong can have consequences.

If you get the name wrong on the contract, can you still sue the right company?

If you sue the wrong company, can you still enforce your judgment?

If you get my staff’s names wrong, will we notice?  Well, yes, we will.

Recently, the lovely Aaliyah Daniel has been re named “Daniel” by another party.

And the talented Jacob Bond is now being referred to as “Jason” by an opponent!

And the hard working Jordan Lock is constantly being mistaken for a man when she is very clearly not!

Like mistakes in your contracts and pleadings, getting names or genders wrong in emails is never the end of the world, and can often be fixed if you know what you’re doing.

However, if you want your colleagues, clients and opponents to take you seriously, attention to detail is always an advantage!
