I often talk about people’s preconceptions about law and how they are often wrong.

Litigation can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be.

Living with a partner for a long time doesn’t automatically give you spousal rights.

An agreement doesn’t have to be in writing to be binding.

You can record conversations without permission.

WhatsApp messages can be relied on in court.

Often the misconceptions arise from people believing what they read or what others tell them.

However, sometimes it’s because things change.

Take, for example, financial proceedings in a divorce where there isn’t a massive amount at stake.  You might assume that it’s too expensive to litigate, so it’s cheaper to give in to the other side rather than run up a disproportionate legal bill.  A while ago I might have agreed, but a new, more streamlined process has just been introduced for divorces of £250k or under (excluding pensions).

As the new process is shorter, it will cost less.  Sweet!

Which not only means that I’m right to say that litigation doesn’t always have to be expensive but also highlights the benefits of keeping in touch with people like me!

Or put another way, hanging out with me at the bar could save you money in the long run!
