Is it me, or is it a bit chilly????

You’re probably thinking it’s me, seeing as how the sun is shining and the tv is full of adverts for BBQ and picnic food.
But I wasn’t talking about the weather.
I was actually talking about Intellectual Property.
If you’re a football fan, you will no doubt know who Cole Palmer is.
If you’re not sure, then he’s a Chelsea Football player, who has a rather unique way of celebrating when he scores a goal (which some would say he hasn’t done nearly enough this season, seeing as they’re only 9th at the time of writing this – they finished 4th last season!)
But the celebration is still fun (if a little rare recently) as he shivers and has become known as Cold Palmer.
His celebration has become so well known, that he’s decided to trademark the move, so that if anyone decides to use it, such as in video games or on clothing, they have to pay him royalties. Given that he only earns £130,000 A WEEK you can understand why he’s being careful with his IP and brand.
But there can be other reasons for wanting to protect your IP – you might, for example, not want it to be used in anything you don’t agree with or approve of. If, for example, he’s a passionate vegan, he might not like the idea of a burger franchise using an image that would make people think of him. Or even worse, having people think that he endorses the franchise.
Whilst this isn’t something that will apply to most people, it doesn’t do any harm to be aware of what your rights are, and your ability to protect yourself, your images, your logo, your ideas and your products.
If there is something you want to protect, intellectually, you’ll find me on the terraces, shivering!
